Statement from South Orange 2025: Leadership in Action

September 11, 2025

Earlier this week, three men in our community were taken into custody by masked ICE and Border Patrol agents. One of these arrests happened within our town’s borders. These actions have no place in South Orange and must be called out for what they are: intimidation and harm.

We appreciate Mayor Collum’s swift response, along with the support of residents who immediately shared information to help connect the family with resources. This is what community looks like: neighbors looking out for one another in a moment of fear and crisis.

As candidates for South Orange Village Council, we stand in solidarity with every resident experiencing fear, anxiety, and sadness right now. South Orange is proud to be a welcoming and inclusive town. Our strength comes from the diversity of people who call this place home, and we are committed to ensuring that all who live here feel a true sense of safety and belonging.

How neighbors can help:

  • Check in on immigrant families and offer support such as accompaniment, meals, childcare, or simply being present.

  • Share trusted resources and connect families with local organizations providing legal and community support.

  • Keep looking out for one another. Silence and isolation only strengthen fear while solidarity creates safety.

If you are approached by ICE:

  • Stay calm and do not run.

  • You have the right to remain silent and the right to ask for a lawyer.

  • You do not have to open your door unless agents show a warrant signed by a judge.

  • You can refuse to consent to a search without a valid judicial warrant.

For a complete guide, visit the ACLU of New Jersey’s website. We also recommend you consider attending this important local training on Thursday, September 25th at 7:30pm.

We call on our municipal leaders to continue responding visibly and proactively, including creating opportunities for residents to understand what steps are being taken to safeguard our community. As a slate, we pledge to advance policies and practices that protect our most vulnerable neighbors while upholding South Orange’s core values of dignity, equity, and compassion.

South Orange thrives when every resident feels they belong. Now more than ever, we must stand together to make sure our community remains a place of safety, inclusion, and hope.
